The Company

Our client is a well-established and fast-growing fence, deck, and screened porch company serving the South Carolina Midlands, including Columbia, Lexington, West Columbia, Gilbert, and Batesburg-Leesville, across both residential and commercial work.

The owner grew up around construction and has built the company from the ground up into one of the region’s most trusted names in fencing, decks, and screened porches. Customers describe the company through fast turnarounds, honest pricing, and crews who show up, do the job right, and clean up after themselves. Referrals and repeat business are the norm, earned one project at a time.

Quote requests come in steadily through the website, truck signage and yard placards on completed jobs, and long-standing relationships with major regional home builders. This is a company people call, not one that has to chase every lead.

The company grows around 10 percent year over year, and the commercial side has grown to the point where the owner can no longer personally bid every opportunity while also running the business. That is the reason this role exists. The owner is also building a growing custom and spec home operation and needs a strong operations leader in place so that side of the business can get the attention it deserves.

Leadership & Culture

You will work directly with the owner, a craftsman-first builder who came up in the trade and still thinks like one. This is a culture built on doing the work right, standing behind it, and treating crews and customers like people, not numbers.

Because the company is owner-led and growing, the person in this role will not be buried in red tape or layers of management. Decisions get made quickly, good work gets noticed, and the owner is looking for someone he can hand real responsibility to, not micromanage. He has a reputation for being fair and generous with the people who help him grow the business.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is built to reward the volume you maintain and, more meaningfully, the growth you create.

  • Base salary: $80,000 – $90,000
  • Growth-based incentive: a tiered incentive tied to the gross profit you help generate. You earn on current volume for keeping the operation running clean, and you earn a larger share on the incremental growth you drive. Every time you move the business to a new tier, the reward steps up with it. Exact percentages and tier thresholds to be finalized with the owner.
  • Realistic earning trajectory: first-year total earnings in the range of $90K, with a credible path to notable growth in income as you grow the business and increase efficiency.
  • Company vehicle: company truck and fuel provided.
  • Paid time off: PTO available after one year of service, plus paid sick time.
  • Health coverage: no company health plan is currently offered. Coverage is obtained through the ACA marketplace, consistent with how most companies in this field operate today.
  • Development: for the right person, the company will invest in management and leadership development training so you can grow from a manager into a member of the leadership team.

The incentive structure above reflects the owner’s current thinking. It stays discretionary while the plan proves out over the first six to twelve months, then gets formalized in writing so there is no guesswork about your earning potential.

The Role

This is a hands-on, operational role that will grow into a business-leadership role. You will take ownership of the pieces of the business the owner has been carrying himself, keep the current operation running clean, and then grow it. Day to day, you will:

  • Run daily operations: coordinate incoming leads and intake, order materials on a weekly cycle, and build and issue crew schedules so every job is set up to succeed.
  • Oversee three installation crews (roughly 12 field team members), keeping jobs on schedule, on budget, and to the company’s quality standard.
  • Walk job sites for quality control, making sure every fence and installation meets the standard the company’s name is built on.
  • Estimate and sell: measure, cost, and win residential and commercial work, and represent the company to new and existing customers.
  • Build the commercial side: track DOT lettings, pursue bid opportunities, and work established general-contractor relationships to win larger projects.
  • Grow gross profit and, as the business scales, hire and lead a dedicated commercial salesperson who reports to you.
  • Serve as the owner’s right hand on operations, freeing him to focus on the next phase of the company’s growth.

The first order of business is to learn the business as it runs today. Expect 90 to 180 days to earn the crews’ trust by doing the work alongside them, and to understand how everything operates before you start changing it. From there, this is a role for someone enterprising enough to find efficiencies, grow the book, and think about the whole business, not just the job in front of them.

Location & Community

This is an on-site, in-the-field role based out of the Columbia, SC area, with work across the Midlands including Lexington, West Columbia, Gilbert, and Batesburg-Leesville. Columbia offers an easy cost of living, a growing job market, top-tier outdoor recreation on Lake Murray and along the Saluda and Congaree Rivers, and a short drive to both the mountains and the coast.

Why Now

The company’s pipeline is outpacing what one owner can bid and manage alone. The reputation, the reviews, the crews, and the incoming work are already in place. The owner is expanding into custom home building and needs a leader who can take the fence company’s operations and commercial growth and run with it. For the right person, that is a rare ownership-level opportunity inside an established, well-regarded company, with earnings that grow as you do.

What Success Looks Like

This role comes with clear, measurable expectations so you always know where you stand. No wondering whether you are doing a good job. You will know what good looks like before you start. Targets below are a framework to be finalized with the owner.

  • First 30 days: accurately measure and cost jobs (target: every job under $20K).
  • First 60 days: earn the crews’ trust and respect by working alongside them and demonstrating real leadership. Build genuine followership.
  • First 90 days: consistently bring in and close larger projects ($50K+ range; cadence to be set with the owner).
  • First 180 days: fully own daily operations and hold the current volume without the owner’s day-to-day involvement.
  • First 365 days: present the owner with a plan to grow the business through operational efficiency, and the sales hire or hires needed to scale it.

If that excites you, you are the person we are looking for. If it does not, this is not the right seat, and that clarity is intentional.
